Membership Spotlight – Asia Farmer

On a continuous basis, IABC Nashville spotlights its diverse members through a Q&A feature. We are pleased to showcase Asia Farmer, HIE Communications Specialist II at HCA Healthcare. 

 IABC: What is your background? 

Asia:  I was born and raised right here in Nashville, TN! I graduated from the University of Tennessee with a B.S. in Communication – Go Vols!! I began my journey in healthcare immediately upon graduation from college through a program designed by my company specifically for recent graduates to become acclimated with the industry. I have a background in communications, healthcare implementation and optimization, project management, and clinical health IT regulations

IABC: How did you get started in this business?

Asia: I have always had a passion for communications. As a child, I dreamt of career where I could use the power of my voice and technology to make a difference. My first job at HCA Healthcare afforded me the opportunity to travel across the country to help hospitals and leadership teams implement electronic health records. It was a rewarding and incredible experience that allowed me to use my voice and technology to be part of that groundbreaking milestone!

 

IABC: What is your current position and business affiliation? How long have you been in this role?

Asia: I recently transitioned to a new role as HIE Communications Specialist II, and I am excited to begin this journey! Although I have been in this new role for a month, I have worked within the Clinical Services Group at HCA Healthcare for almost 6 years.

 

IABC: What makes your business/organization stand out?

Asia: HCA Healthcare is one of the largest healthcare companies in the United States. Although one of the largest, we still have an unwavering commitment to the quality of care for every patient that visits a facility and the growth and development of every employee.

 

IABC: If you could describe yourself in three (3) words, what would it be?

Asia: I am an extrovert, vibrant, and dedicated.

 

IABC: Tell something about yourself people would be surprised to learn.

Asia: I participate in specialty/fun 5k races throughout the year such as The Color Run, The Hot Chocolate Run, and The 5k Foam Fest! If anyone has further suggestions of specialty/fun 5k races, please feel free to share!

 

IABC: What lesson(s) have you learned along the way that you believe has made you a better communications professional?

Asia:

The following nuggets have helped me tremendously in my career:

  1. Always plan and prepare your work ahead of the scheduled deadline.
  2. Always fearlessly ask questions.
  3. Always cite your sources and give credit to others.
  4. Always edit and check your work multiple times before the final submission.
  5. Always practice and rehearse until you are confident in your knowledge.

 

IABC: What makes an effective communications leader?

Asia: An effective communications leader works diligently to listen and invest in the growth of their team and be willing to take on challenges. In addition, an effective communications leader strives to be adaptable in their approach to train and educate individuals with varying learning styles and experiences.

 

IABC: What do you feel is the greatest benefit of IABC?

Asia: The benefits are endless! But most importantly, connecting with other communications professionals to learn, share, and develop friendships will be quite fulfilling

 

IABC: What prompted you to join IABC?

Asia: I am a major advocate for professional development and continuing education to stay up-to-date on the latest trends and best practices for my role. Through IABC, I hope to learn more about different communications specialties and methods to add to my current role and help others with their brand and message.
